Blessed Daniel Brottier was born in France in 1876. He began a teaching career in 1899. Because of Daniel’s love of the gospel, he joined the missionary Congregation of the Holy Spirit as a priest. He was sent to West Africa for eight years. Then, due to poor health, he had to return to France, where helped to raise money for the construction of a new cathedral in Senegal.

When World War I broke out, Daniel became a volunteer chaplain on the front lines. Through 52 months of ministering to the sick and dying, he was never injured.

After the war ended, Daniel was invited helped to establish an orphanage for children in a Paris suburb. He remained there 13 years until his death in 1936. Pope John Paul II beatified Daniel Brottier in Paris 48 years later.
